The research behind TMS devices dates back to the 1980s.
The first modern TMS device was introduced in 1985. It was developed from research and prior related devices from as far back as the 1800s with the discovery of electromagnetic induction by Michael Faraday, which you can watch a short video on here.
TMS has been FDA approved for depression since 2004 and has been running in Australia since around then, mostly completed inpatient.
It is on the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists' Guidelines (RANZCP) for depression and recommended by the RANZCP for depression.
In November 2021 Medicare began rebating outpatient TMS sessions.
